Waiting List Alternative

For those waiting for a kidney or liver transplant, there is another option. It's called a living donation. If compatible, a person can choose to donate an organ to someone in need.

There are potential benefits to living organ donation, such as:

  • The organ may be from a healthy person who has had a medical evaluation
  • Surgery can be scheduled when the recipient's medical status is stable
  • The time that the donated organ is without a blood supply may be shorter compared with a deceased donor organ

If you are in need of a kidney or liver transplant, living donation may be something you want to talk to your doctor and family about. For more information about living donation, you may find the Sharing Life and Starting the Conversation brochures helpful.
